NBL1 Weekend Recap

Tasmania JackJumpers Players
The JackJumper players are out and playing in various leagues around the world during the off season. Majok Deng is currently playing for Al Ahly Ly Sporting Club in the Basketball Africa League, Milton Doyle is playing for the Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rico. The rest of our full rostered players are currently playing in the NBL1 with Gorjok Gak playing in the NBL1 West for Rockingham Flames, Sean Macdonald is back for his second year with the Darwin Salties, Anthony Drmic and Fabijan Krslovic have teamed up in NBL1 central for the West Adelaide Bearcats, and Clint Steindl has signed with the Hobart Chargers in the NBL1 south playing his first weekend of games this weekend.

Friday 26/4/24
WOMEN
Launceston Tornadoes (79) defeated Ballarat Miners (61)
The addition of Keely Froling back into the Launceston Tornadoes line-up was enough for her to shine and help her team to a first win of 2024, beating the Ballarat Miners 79-61.

Launceston went on a 10-0 run in the opening period and by quarter-time that saw them leading 26-12.
The Tornadoes turned that into a 14-0 scoring run into the second period and that saw the lead blow out to 20 points, and they were still on top 40-20 by the half-time interval.
The lead got out to as much as 22 points in the second half as well with Launceston on the way to the 18-point victory.
Keely Froling starred in the win for the Tornadoes with 31 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists on 13/22 shooting from the field, 2/2 from downtown and 3/4 at the foul line.
Trinity Oliver also put up 24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, Josie Pinkerton 8 points, 8 boards, and 5 assists, Sarah O'Neill 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists, and Ava McDonald 8 points, 3 assists, 2 blocked shots, and 2 boards.


Hobart Chargers (70) lost to Casey Cavaliers (72)
Hobart came out strongly to lead by eight early but then Casey steadied and by quarter-time were on top 19-14.
The momentum swung again in the second quarter with Hobart putting up 17 points to 12 in the second frame and by half-time the scores were all locked at 31-31.
Hobart were able to pull away to an 11-point lead again the third quarter but then it was Casey who responded with a 9-0 run in the fourth to set up the frantic finish.
In the end, Casey were leading by a point with Hobart having one last play. Jayda Jansen was fouled and went to the stripe to make the first to level scores, but she missed the second that could have been the winner.
On the rebound, the Cavs had a chance at the prayer but turned the ball over too as time expired with scores locked at 60-60 and the game went to an extra period.
While the Chargers went up four during overtime, the Cavaliers weren’t going to let the chance slip and ultimately it was a drive and finish inside from Taylah Gillam that put Casey on top 72-70.
Kayla Steindl put up 23 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks for the Chargers with Cierra Walker contributing 20 points and 6 boards, and Jayda Jansen 17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocked shots.

MEN
North West Tasmania Thunder (98) defeated Ballarat Miners (95)
It was the Thunder narrowly leading 29-26 by half-time and the home team did push out to an eight-point lead in another high-scoring second period.
North West went into the half-time break leading 60-53 with the lead getting out to a game-high 10 points in the third frame, but Ballarat continued to stay in touch and that set up a thrilling finish.
Seth Swalve put North West in front when he knocked down a three-pointer.
Majok Majok then put the Miners back on top before Tre Armstrong responded with a three ball for North West.
In the end with just under a minute to play, it was a triple from Ben Woolley on the find from Swalve following a Luke Rosendale turnover for Ballarat that was the decisive shot of the contest.
The Thunder went on to win by three from there to improve to 2-4 on the season with Tre Armstrong top-scoring with 18 points, and 3 rebounds on shooting 4/6 from three-point territory.
Sekou Sylla added 16 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals with Seth Swalve contributing 16 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists, and Archer Woodhill 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Ben Woolley also had 12 points, 3 boards, 3 assists, and 2 blocked shots, and Ryley Haywood 10 points, and 2 assists.

Hobart Chargers (88) defeated Casey Cavaliers (79)
The Hobart Chargers welcomed Clint Steindl into the line-up and beat the Casey Cavaliers 88-79 to make it three straight victories this NBL1 South season.
Hobart managing to open up a 10-point advantage in the opening term and still leading 24-16 at quarter-time.
The lead for the Chargers got out to 11 points in the second quarter but then the Cavs fired back by scoring 14 straight points to turn that into a five-point advantage.
Hobart turned things back around to be leading 41-39 at half-time and then the momentum swings continued with the Cavaliers working back on top to go back up six, and to be leading 63-60 going into the final period.
The Chargers turned the game in their favour for good from there scoring 15 straight points to end up leading by as much as 12, and winning by nine to make it a third straight win.
Vionte Daniels continued his standout form for Hobart with another 22 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals with Jacob Richards adding 21 points, 10 boards, and 3 assists.
JackJumpers captain Clint Steindl had 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals with Ole Angerstein contributing 10 points, 10 boards, and 4 blocks, Zach White 10 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds, and Joe Chilcott 9 points, 6 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Saturday 27/4/24
Womens
Hobart Chargers (72) defeated Ballarat Miners (65)
The Chargers were able to open up an eight-point lead in the first quarter but it remained a tight contest the rest of the first half before Hobart held on to a 38-32 advantage going into the break.
There was never more than nine points between the two teams the entire game, but the Chargers did maintain a narrow lead most of the contest and eventually held strong for the seven-point victory.
Jayda Jansen had 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists including knocking down 4/11 from three-point range.
Cierra Walker added 16 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals, Kayla Steindl 12 points, 15 boards, 3 assists, and 3 steals and Chloe Broomhall pulled down 10 rebounds.

Launceston Tornadoes (74) lost to Casey Cavaliers (82)
Casey were able to open up a seven-point lead in the first quarter but it was back to just a two-point game by quarter-time.
Again the Cavaliers opened up a 13-point lead in the second term and they would end up outscoring Launceston 24 points to 15 to go into half-time on top 45-34.
It was more of the same from Casey in the third quarter with another 23 points to 11 and that saw the lead for the visitors grow to as much as 23 points.
Launceston threw everything at the fightback in the last quarter and they did put up 29 points to 14, but the deficit proved too much with the Cavs holding out for the eight-point win.
Keely Froling delivered another 18 points, and 9 rebounds for Launceston with Trinity Oliver contributing 17 points, 13 boards, and 4 steals, Macey Crawford 16 points, and 4 rebounds, and Josie Pinkerton 13 points and, 3 boards.

MENS
Hobart Chargers (79) lost to Ballarat Miners (88)
The Chargers were leading by five points early before the Miners hit back with an 8-0 run to end up leading by five at quarter-time.
Ballarat were still clinging to a 40-37 lead at the half-time break but Hobart fired back in the third period with the home team grabbing the lead, and then still being up one early in the final period.
However, the Miners took control of the contest from there and for good this time opening up a 10-point lead and winning by nine to improve to a 4-2 record as a result.
Jacob Richards top-scored with 20 points, and 8 rebounds with Ole Angerstein contributing 17 points, and 14 boards on 8/11 shooting.
Vionte Daniels also had 17 points and Clint Steindl 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

North West Tasmania Thunder (84) defeated Casey Cavaliers (83)
Casey leading by a point at quarter-time and then North West were up by one at half-time.
It was the Cavaliers who opened up a game-high 11-point lead in the third quarter but North West Tasmania again fired back and it all set up a dramatic finish.
After Dillon Stith restored a three-point lead for Casey with five minutes to play, North West scored the next four points to retake the lead and it continued to exchange hands the rest of the way.
After two free-throws from Isaac Atuer put the Thunder up by three with just under a minute to play, Josh Tomasi threw down a dunk for Casey.
Then after a turnover for the Thunder from Sekou Sylla as he attempted a drive, the Cavaliers scored up the other end to go back in front by a point when Stith was able to tip back in the attempted layup from Preston Bungei.
North West had one more chance out of a timeout and Tre Armstrong's shot in the corner missed but then Sylla soared over the pack spectacularly to grab the offensive rebound. He then bounced back up to put in the basket as the buzzer sounded and the Thunder won in dramatic fashion.
Sekou Sylla finished with 27 points, and 10 rebounds.
Tre Armstrong added 15 points, and 3 rebounds, Seth Swalve 9 points, 6 boards, and 6 assists, and Archer Woodhill 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.
