A joint statement from Chair, Steve Old and CEO, Christine Finnegan
Dear JackJumpers Family,
There is simply no place for any type of abuse in our game.
The Tasmania JackJumpers wholeheartedly condemn the harmful comments and personal attacks that have impacted our playing group and their family members. We want to express to our community just how distressing recent events on social media have been for our players and their loved ones. This behaviour is absolutely unacceptable, and it has no place in our sport.
Our CEO was informed of these incidents and immediately contacted the Basketball Australia Integrity Unit, who have assured us that they are giving this matter the highest priority. The players are reminded in their Integrity Education Sessions to refer any matters of harassment directly to the Integrity Unit, and we are supporting them fully in doing so.
The JackJumpers family is our number one priority, and we are absolutely committed to supporting our players and their families through this time, including connecting them with additional support services as needed. The club has offered its unconditional support to all family members affected by this behaviour.
As our Head Coach Scott Roth has stated, we accept feedback and constructive criticism on our on-court performance. Adversity and challenges are part of the competitive nature of professional sport. However, we will never accept any form of abusive behaviour or threats.
Our players, coaches, staff, and their families are hardworking, passionate people who deserve respect.
You may have noticed we have temporarily turned off comments on our social media accounts. This step is not to avoid criticism around on-court results but to protect our people during this time.
It’s unfortunate we felt the need to implement this measure, as the vast majority of our community’s engagement is supportive and welcomed.
The club will continue to work closely with the Basketball Australia Integrity Unit to address this matter and create a safe and positive environment for everyone in our community.
Let’s stand together to support our team on and off the court.
Let’s Defend the Island Together.
With kindness and respect,
Christine Finnegan (CEO) and Steve Old (Chair)
