JackJumpers Push United to the Limit in a Nail-Biting Finish

The Tasmania JackJumpers delivered an electrifying performance at John Cain Arena, pushing Melbourne United to the brink in a high-stakes clash. Despite holding a commanding lead for much of the game, the JackJumpers were edged out in a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback, falling 94-92 in a game that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Tasmania came into the contest knowing the importance of securing a win to keep their finals hopes alive, and they wasted no time asserting themselves. The JackJumpers raced out to an early 10-5 lead, with sharpshooters Reuben Te Rangi and Clint Steindl setting the tone from beyond the arc. Their aggressive defense forced Melbourne into early turnovers, allowing Tasmania to capitalize with a 13-4 run to close the first quarter. A buzzer-beater from Fabijan Krslovic punctuated a dominant opening term, with the JackJumpers putting up 32 points to lead by 11.
The momentum carried into the second quarter as Majok Deng knocked down a three to stretch the lead to 13, before Milton Doyle’s deep triple extended it to a game-high 16. Tasmania’s offensive efficiency was impressive, shooting 53% from the field while also punishing United on the glass, creating second-chance opportunities and turning defense into offense. Doyle and Jordon Crawford were instrumental, combining for 27 first-half points as Tasmania took a 61-51 lead into the main break.
Melbourne, however, refused to back down. The home side, playing at John Cain Arena for the first time since late December, had built a reputation for resilience, and they showed exactly why they sit near the top of the ladder. United tightened up defensively, limiting Tasmania’s offensive rhythm and forcing tough shots. Shea Ili and Chris Goulding knocked down back-to-back three-pointers late in the half, giving Melbourne a much-needed boost heading into the locker room.
The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets, with Tasmania maintaining control despite United’s increasing defensive intensity. Crawford and Doyle continued to lead the charge, while Deng provided a valuable spark. At one point, Melbourne cut the deficit to six, but Tasmania responded immediately, pushing the lead back out to double digits. Heading into the final term, the JackJumpers still held a nine-point advantage, but the momentum had begun to shift.
Melbourne came out firing in the fourth, launching a relentless assault that saw them go on a 10-0 run in the first three minutes. Ili’s on-ball pressure was game-changing, disrupting Tasmania’s ball handlers and creating easy transition points for United. Rob Loe’s and-one play gave Melbourne their first lead since the opening minutes, and from there, United dictated the pace. Despite Tasmania’s best efforts, they struggled to regain control, with Melbourne’s defense proving the difference in the final stretch.
Ili was the standout performer for Melbourne, finishing with 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists while playing a key role in the defensive turnaround. Kyle Bowen stepped up with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Loe added 12 points and five assists. Ian Clark (12 points) and Goulding (10 points) also made valuable contributions, with Goulding’s early shooting helping to keep Melbourne in the fight.
For Tasmania, Crawford led the scoring with 20 points and three assists, while Doyle added 19 points and seven assists. Deng (15 points), Drmic (10 points, four rebounds), and Gak (nine points, five boards) all made an impact, but ultimately, the JackJumpers were outscored 43-31 in the second half, unable to withstand Melbourne’s late charge.
Despite the loss, Tasmania remains in the hunt for a finals spot, though they now face a must-win clash against the Cairns Taipans in their final regular-season game. A strong performance, combined with favourable results elsewhere, could still see them break into the top six. With their season on the line, the JackJumpers will be looking to bring the same energy and intensity they displayed in the first half against Melbourne, but this time, sustain it for the full four quarters.
